Check out this Darpa off road Desert race for Robots. It has a $2,000,000 prise for winning it, and a the Carnegie Mellon team that I helped out a few times looks like they might possibly have won it, but the results are not official yet. They even listed my shop as a sponsor:D Interesting stuff, the vehicles drive themselves off of what they see.

 I thought it would take at least a decade for the technology to advance enough to finish this "race". I've seen footage of Darpa, most of the rigs don't make it past the first obstacle.
Somebody cashed in on the X prize (space travel). $10,000,000.00
And jeep still can't put decent axles under their rigs.

Dang, Red Team lost by 11 minutes in a 10 hour race:( Still was pretty successful, and I'm glad they finished. I installed the engine in the 3rd place H1, the trans in the 2nd place H1, and we spent 2 days before the race preparing them for the event out at NATC. It was pretty cool working with Red team, a lot of very smart people. They rolled the Highlander H1 a week before the event and ripped off the left front corner, so I helped patch it together last minute before qualifing in Fontana.

I've heard from a person who worked with one of the teams that the course was pretty easy and it looked like they were just trying to get a winner this time, rather than test the technologies in hardest conditions.
