Peavine 7th Street Pits

Anyone interested in a Peavine run? I went up there a few weeks ago and the sand pits area looked like it was being developed, the trails leading there were blocked off with new fence, so I went up on another hill overlooking it. I went in on the Kings Row entrance and went west about 2 miles.

Then saw all the heavy construction equipment down there leveling it out. Looks like yet another subdivision creeping up the hill.

I was out there two thursday ago, and I saw what you mean. We ended up in a construction area by accident, and they weren't too happy with us. As far as I know though, we still had a right to be there. The trail went right through where they were working

the 7th steet pits are a thing of the past, as 1/2 of the pits is private property, there will soon be several large homes there. There is a road that goes up toward fenceline road in a small canyon, between the old pits and the hill to the north. that road was supposed to be closed but we fought to jkeep it open as a connector road to fenceline and the las brisas access point. the meeting with the USFS on monday revealed many more changes to the peavine road strategy-- severfal well used roads will be decommissioned (ripped under and reseeded) and Zukles canyon is now officially off limits. Bud canyon is still on the maybe list-- they want some group to 'adopt' that trail to convince the upper managers to keep it open. they don't like the driving in stream bed thing-- it might endanger the hunch backed toad or whatever... they suggested connecting Bud with the old mining prospect road that ends just before the last waterfall on Bud.

that's the story from here...

Hmm, might be an option for us to adopt as a group (Reno4x4.com).

Mark, what kind of process do we need to go through to get this done? Do we have to be a registered group or an informal group thing is acceptable?

Call the Carson City USFS office and ask for Larry Randall or Larry Anderson, they're the guys to work with. the HA would do it, but we have already adopted Jeep Eater Hill on Peavine and the entire Hunter Lake Road, so other groups are welcome to pitch in. Let me know what he says...

Its on the west side, between mogul and bordertown, high in the trees. most maps of the area were based on ariel pictures, its not on the old maps due to the tree canopy. Still, it is now an officially recognized USFS road, as is the nearby Squeeze Rock trail, that used to be closed but due to lobby efforts, the 'road closed' carsonite sign was taken down. cool, huh?
While u dudes were on Bronco cyn last sat. the HA were up there cutting up an old car that was rusting to pieces in Bull Ranch Creek and we got to run JEH. its easy this time of year, as the loose sand and big rocks are kinda fused together, (even one of our lady members driove right up it!) but go there later when its warmer and its a real @#%%^@$^ to get up. It twists thru the trees and goes straight UP!
Maybe we could set up a run some day from Bordertown casino to Squeeze rock to JEH then exit near (what's left of) the 7th street pits. BTW, know why its called that? Well, 7th satreet used to 'end' at the 7-11 now where 7th and Mc Carran is. This is before Mc Carran was even a politicians dream. Anyway, the road to the pits started right where the 7-11 is now, and it was 4x4 all the way. No houses or anything west of there-- that was in like 1985.

Bad news for our run last w/e, by Milwaukee power tool bag (and all the cool tools) somehow got lost on the trail-- i was in the lead and no one said they saw anything, so... who the heck knows... All my stuff was engraved w/ name/#. Went and back this week and tracked our route and no luck! Argh! So someone must have found my $$$$ tools and the dishonest ba$tards will someday get their payback...

Also, back near JEH, LOTS of snow! Dan Dye can tell the rest of the story-- he had to help w/ extraction duties several times.

7th Street Pitts

Rare CJ has the 7th street story correct. We used to go up 7th past the seven eleven, then about 4-6 miles to the sandy & mud bog area known as the 7th Street Pitts for parties after cruising. I took a VW bug up there in 89/90 on a regular basis...lol.

wow our wheeling schedule is starting to look really packed here with all of the trips planned- and there are a lot of places i REALLY want to go. i did hunter lake yesterday. went as far as i could which was about halfway ( where the road turns a sharp right, right after the road thats really bumpy and changes direction, but before you go through the zig zag trail thats about a mile before the lake- all snow, so i went back down to the basin and played in the ditches and wash aways. tested the locker out and tried to get stuck or high centered, or even lift a damn tire- all with no avail, so i went further down and found some really hairy looking wash aways, cruised right through them- super fun though!

rarecj8 - pick a day or weekend to go on the peavine run, and ill be there! i would love to be atleast shown where everything is. im sure ive driven all of it, but been completely oblivious to what the names of the areas are. the only places on peavine that i havent really explored is far back on the west side of the hill when it starts turning into california- ive never seen how far west i can go yet. other than that ive taken all of the entrances to peavine i can find, like the ones along way north 395, the main peavine road, and the kings row one that leads to bud canyon. ive done about 1/4 mile of bud canyon- all the way till the first waterfall then decided that i would wait and do it when im with other people, so that if i get stuck or cant get back down, atelast i have another vehicle to winch from.
seriously though, im always down for some wheeling, catch me any weekend and ill work it into my schedule, so find a good day for you and well call it a wheeling date!

Yeah, PJ, let's kick around some dates. I have free this coming sunday 5/15-- we should meet At Bordertown Casino, head south to Miotchell Cyn, squeeze rock, Jeep Eater Hill (which BTW, is pretty tame now that the loose sand/rocks are wet) and eventually work our way over to the aspen trees and from there over to fenceline to the rock garden,(yeah!) and from there hop over to the 'razor back' and pop out at kings row.

ideas?

anyone?
