Iced Out rnd 1 Recap / Results

R.E.C.O.N. Crawlers is dedicated to the r/c crawling lifestyle. We are always pushing the limits of fun and the result of that commitment is a following of some of the most talented, energetic, and nicest people that you will ever meet. If you seek adventure in r/c crawling, then look no further, because adventure has a name; RECON Crawlers and we are going to keep creating fun for the r/c crawling families around the globe.

The anticipation has been high ever since the announcement of the 2011/12 RECON Crawlers “Iced Out” Winter Series rnd 1 to be held at Pyramid Lake, NV. The Tufa rock at Pyramid Lake is unlike any other rock in the sense that it is magical. I can’t explain it, but Pyramid Lake just has to be driven or you just won’t get it. For example, Course 4; gate 8 was literally vertical for 2 feet and yet, in total disbelief, drivers yelled like school girls as they cleared the gate on top of the climb.

Pit talk that was surfacing while drivers walked the 7 courses was the fact that 8 of the 23 Pro drivers are nationally ranked. I was busy dubbing round 1 as the “Clash of Champions”, because in attendance was the current Nevada State 2.2 Pro Champion John Hall and the 2011 Axial West Coast Champion and current National Champion, Brian “Burbo” Lorenz. Then to thicken the plot of the 2.2 Pro Class, Nevada State 2.2 Sport Champion, Nick Jackson, is making his 2.2 Pro debut along with the 2011 Axial West Coast 2.2 Sport Champion, Spencer French and on top of that, there was past RECON Series Champions in the house. Willy Davis and I each have a Championship belt of our own and you can never count out two time RECON Sport Champion, Cole Bailey, who is coming off a great showing at the National LCQ.

With 2.2 comps dwindling in attendance and self proclaimed “event organizers” dumbing down the comp scene, I am honored to report that we had some new faces eager to experience a real comp. What’s a real comp? A comp that puts integrity into every course by not driving it and setting gates ¼ inch from the line, but instead, letting the drivers determine where a line is or isn’t. A real comp pushes a driver to drive beyond his or her skill level and reach new levels in the mental game of r/c crawling. A real comp is one that when you leave, you can’t wait for the next one. But don’t let me define a real comp for you, come out to a RECON Crawlers 2.2 comp and define it for yourself!

Two drivers added to their bag of 2.2 Pro driving tricks and they learned the “Blip-Dig”. A Blip-Dig is the ability to blip up a vertical ledge and catch your front tires on top of the ledge by hitting your front dig at just the right time. Burbo and John Hall did this successfully and if you could have seen the smiles on their faces, then you would have the answer to why I do what I do.

Two more drivers that elevated the talent pool of round 1 was the Father and Son duo of Dan and Spencer French. I’m telling you, this is going to be the best RECON Winter Series ever! So buckle up, round one is underway!

The stage was set with 7 courses of gate clearing fun. The multi-lap course saw the most technical speed section ever and it got the best of everyone except Nevada’s National Invite winner Jeremy “Stubs” Keyes. He completed both laps in dominating fashion scoring a 0 and -8. Jeremy is ranked 11th in the Nation and his driving backs it up. The Bonus Progression Course was dominated by several drivers while the extended course shut down all but 5 drivers who climbed the “camel toe” that lead to gate 9, but the course of the day was course 5, the Area 5150 Course.

The RECON Iced out Winter Series features a new class, the AR-60 Class. This class uses the Axial AR-60 OCP axle found on the Axial Wraith, where speed meets rocks and talk about fun! Congratulations to John Hall for the first ever AR-60 Class winner and uber mad props to Marshal Law for tying me for 2nd place. For drivers who love a challenge and enjoy driving a shafty, this class is for you. I can’t wait for round 2, because this class is a true driver’s class.

Willy Davis, RECON veteran and renowned 2.2 Pro drivers who loves flying to comps, judged the Area 5150 Course. This course was set in an alien landscape and with the abduction of the reverse penalties left drivers with only one thing to do; DRIVE! And they did, because the gates were narrowed, but without the worry of reverses, drivers had fun pushing lines and then the course pushed back. Course 4, gate 10 has the potential of being one of the top 3 gates of the year.

I have always been a fan of the 2.2 Pro Rookies. RECON 2.2 Pro Rookies battle out a rookie race to be crowned Rookie of the Year and this year is going to be one of the best! Big props to these rookies, Spencer French, Martin Febangle, Mike Keough, Nick Jackson, John Halman, Jim Boss, and Jerry Clark. Good luck, drivers and “Do Work”!

Big thanks go out to the RECON Satellite club BYBRCC. Mr. Zanter, Marshal Law, Burbo, and Stubs for their help and if your in the Sacramento, CA area on a Tuesday or Thursday, stop by the compound for some serious fun.

Thank you, judges, Cole, Brad, Willy, Shannon, and Jeremy Clark and big shout out to Spucknit for making some kick ass clip boards that performed flawlessly all day.

Thank you, to Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation for being such great host and every driver did their part to leave the Tamaracks cleaner than we found them.

Congratulations to Jayson P. for winning the 2.2 Sport Class and he is "in to win it" for a series title. Young Zach C. finished 2nd and Sam Pedrick round out the podium in 3rd.

Here are the 2.2 Pro results;
