Sam Cothrun from Samco Fabrication got the offer to drive the Coast Aluminum Class 10 Alumicraft in the Baja 1000 with JJ Schnarr and asked me to navigate for him. How can you pass up an offer like that?

When Mark Leverett (formerly of Levco Transmission and Torchmate, now running Mark1 Metal Works) turned the car over to us it was in great shape, but unfortunately after being stuck in the silt for over 2 hours we were out of the hunt for the class win.

That took the pressure off Sam and I as we ran the last 320 miles of race course and spent 10 hours straight in the car (starting at 2:30 AM). We finished 4th in our class (out of 22 vehicles) and 27th overall (out of 254 vehicles). We weren't the only finishers from Reno, as Rod Hall's H3 team came second in Stock Full (with Bayshore's own Aaron Lechner co-driving for Rod's granddaughter Shelby). Highlights of the week for me included:

- Passing a Trophy Truck during the race with a 4 cylinder buggy
- Sleeping on the beach
- Prerunning the race course in a truck that Sam built from scratch
- Eating way too many tacos
- Passing cars on the dirt shoulder of a highway at 60 mph (haven't you always wanted to do that?)
- Nerfing a car for the first time
- Getting stuck in silt for the first time

There are so many stories to tell, but I will keep this short and sweet.

Congrats, both to your team and to Rod Hall on finishing a very long race, where some classes didn't have finishers at all.

Nice Harry, congratulations! 4th in class 10 is very respectable. I didn't even look at the course map this year, which beach? Were you on the San Felipe side?

Yeah I drove the 4Runner down to Vegas for SEMA and then on to Baja. It needs a thorough cleaning now!

Awesome story. I can only imagine what it was like.

What does nerfing a car involve? It sounds fun and I am guessing it would land me in jail here.

Nerfing is just "bumping" the car in front of you to let them know you are back there, and they need to let you pass. A nerf can range from a gentle nudge to a full blown punt right off the race course. It is usually used when there is no response to a horn or siren.
